Daniel K. Pai taught each and every one of us something especially important to us individually. He taught me how to learn and for this I will be forever grateful. His very existence forced me to recognize as undesirable acquaintances the follies I had already embraced and thus make it possible for me to correct many an error. Creating an environment which promoted this type of education was Grandmaster Pais true genius and he expressed this simply by being himself. Grandmaster Pai became part of us all in unique and interesting ways while he lived. Now that he is dead, we may choose to continue our experience of and with him by acknowledging him as what he has become, our ancestry. May we also benefit from the parts of him that we experience in each other if we choose to maintain familial ties. I know I speak for Pai Li-Lung, Pai Ching-Lin, and Pai Hsin-Lung as well as for myself when I say that those familial ties are always open on our end to those who worked with, and love this great man. There is only one thing which I would hope none of us would knowingly fall prey to -- that is the tendency that humans have to revise and edit the lives of the dead, turning sinners into saints and thereby more effectively destroying the worth to those left behind and future generations than mere physical death could ever accomplish. On the way here from my home in Delmar, NJ I came across an epitaph which must have been written for someone very much like Grandmaster Pai: |
